How to Lube Switches (and When Not to Bother)
"Lube your switches" is the hobby's most-given advice, and for once the hype is deserved: lubing transforms scratchy, pingy switches into smooth, refined ones for the cost of an evening and a tiny jar of grease. Here's the honest version of how, what with, and whether your switches even need it.
What lubing does — and when to skip it
Hand-lubing applies a thin film of lubricant to a switch's moving surfaces: the stem's rails, the housing's rails, and the spring. It kills three noises — scratch (stem friction), spring ping (metallic ring on press), and rattle — and smooths the stroke noticeably. The catch built into modern reality: many current switches ship factory-lubed well enough that hand-lubing adds little. If your switches already feel smooth and silent-springed, spend the evening elsewhere. Lubing pays off most on unlubed budget switches, older stock, and enthusiasts chasing the last few percent of refinement.

The supplies

The process, switch by switch
1. Open the switch. Seat it in the opener and press — the top housing's clips release and the switch separates into top housing, stem, spring, and bottom housing. Keep parts sorted; stems launch across rooms when mishandled, a rite of passage.
2. Lube the bottom housing. Brush a thin film on the rails the stem slides against and, for linears, a light pass where the stem's legs contact the leaf area — sparingly, since over-lubing the leaf can mute actuation feel. Avoid the metal leaf contacts themselves.
3. Do the spring. The efficient method is bag-lubing: all springs in a small plastic bag with a drop or two of thin oil, shake for a minute, done. This alone kills spring ping and is the single highest-value step — some people bag-lube springs and skip everything else.
4. Lube the stem. Hold it with tweezers, brush thin coats on the sides and rails. For tactiles, skip the front legs (they create the bump); for linears, legs get a light pass too.
5. Reassemble. Spring on its post, stem on the spring (facing the leaf), top housing on until it clicks. Press-test it. Repeat sixty-nine more times, ideally with a podcast.
How thin is "thin"?
The universal beginner error is too much lube. The film should be barely visible — a sheen, not a coating. If you can see white grease accumulating, you're building a slow, mushy switch. The community mantra: you can always add more, but removing over-lube means disassembly and cleaning. Lube two or three test switches, reassemble, and type on them before committing to the batch; your second attempt's coats will be half as thick as your first, and correct.
Reality check on time: a full 70-switch board is two to four hours of repetitive fine-motor work. Batch the steps (open all, lube all bottoms, all stems…) rather than finishing each switch individually — it's meaningfully faster and keeps coat thickness consistent.
Films and springs: the companion mods
While switches are open anyway, two optional upgrades. Switch films — thin gaskets between housings — tighten any wobble between top and bottom housing and slightly deepen sound; they matter on loose-tolerance switches and do little on tight modern ones. Spring swaps change the weight of any switch you otherwise love — a whole aftermarket of weights and spring geometries exists for exactly this. Both are cheap and turn a lube session into full switch tuning ($).

No judgment in the honest alternative — factory-lubed switches from current lines are good enough that hand-lubing is increasingly a choice, not a necessity, and some sellers offer hand-lubed switches at a per-switch premium. If your hours are worth more than the premium, that's just math. The used market adds a third path: enthusiasts destash professionally-lubed switches constantly, listed with the lube and films specified, often at little over unlubed retail. The hobby's obsessiveness becomes your discount.
Aftercare: does lube wear out?
A properly thin application lasts years of normal typing — lube migrates and settles rather than vanishing, and most people never re-lube a switch. If a board turns scratchy again after heavy use, dust ingress is the likelier culprit than lube failure: opening a few switches for inspection tells you which, and a re-lube at that point doubles as a cleaning. Store spare lubed switches in a closed container; open-air storage collects the dust you just engineered out.
One final scope note: everything above concerns MX-style switches. Low-profile switches disassemble differently and rarely reward lubing, and hall-effect switches with their factory smoothness generally shouldn't be opened at all — check maker guidance before applying MX habits to either.
